What is Prøve i Dansk 2?
Prøve i Dansk 2 (PD2) is Denmark's official B1-level Danish language exam, administered by SIRI — Styrelsen for International Rekruttering og Integration (the Danish Agency for International Recruitment and Integration). It is recognised as proof of Danish language proficiency for employment, further education, and various residency requirements.
PD2 tests your ability to understand written Danish in everyday contexts, produce short written texts, and communicate orally about familiar topics. It is the second of three levels in the Prøve i Dansk series — above PD1 (A2) and below PD3 (B2).
Exam structure (Prøvestruktur)
PD2 is divided into three parts (delprøver), each tested separately. You must pass all three parts to receive the full certificate.
Sample questions
Below are examples of the types of questions you'll encounter. The Bestå app contains full exercises built in the same format and structure as PD2 exam tasks.
Task 1 — Information search (Søg informationer)
You read a short text, then answer questions in Danish. The text and questions below are as they appear on the exam.

Task 2 — Advertisements (Annoncer)
You read a description of a person's needs, then match them to the correct ad (A–I). Both the situation and the ads are in Danish.
Lars vil gerne købe en brugt cykel til under 500 kr.
Lars wants to buy a used bicycle for under DKK 500.
Annonce E: Mountainbike, 21 gear, 1.200 kr. Kan ses i Valby. Ring 3186 4455.
Annonce F: Dame-cykel gratis til afhentning. Se billeder på finn.dk/12345.
Hvilken annonce passer til Lars? Skriv et bogstav (A–I).
Which ad matches Lars? Write a letter (A–I).
✓ D — cykel under 500 kr. i god stand / a bicycle under DKK 500 in good condition
Written production — email task (E-mail)
The writing tasks are given entirely in Danish. You write your answer in Danish. Task 2 requires a minimum of 100 words.
Din ven har skrevet til dig og spørger om din by. Skriv en e-mail til din ven. Skriv mindst 100 ord.
Your friend has written to you asking about your city. Write an email to your friend. Write at least 100 words.
In Bestå, your written answer is graded by AI for grammar, vocabulary, task completion and coherence — matched to PD2 marking criteria.
Scoring (Bedømmelse)
Each part is graded on the Danish 7-point scale (7-trinsskalaen): 12, 10, 7, 4, 02, 00, and -3. To pass PD2 you need a weighted average of at least 2.0 across all three parts. Importantly, oral communication counts double in this calculation — so the speaking part has the greatest impact on your final result.

Registration & dates (Tilmelding og datoer)
PD2 is offered continuously throughout the year at language schools (sprogskoler) and exam centres across Denmark. You register through your local language school, not centrally through SIRI.
If you are enrolled in a Danish language course (danskuddannelse), your school will typically arrange the exam for you. If not, you can contact an exam centre directly.

Preparation tips
- Reading: Practise skimming Danish texts quickly for specific information — task 1 is timed and rewards fast scanning, not deep reading.
- Advertisements task: Read the five "people" descriptions carefully before looking at the ads. Match the most specific detail first (price, location, category).
- Gap fill: Read the full dialogue once before filling in anything. Grammar and context clues together are faster than guessing word by word.
- Writing: Structure matters more than vocabulary. A short, coherent answer scores better than a longer answer that drifts off topic.
- Speaking: Prepare 4–5 topics you can speak about confidently — your job, your neighbourhood, Danish culture, your background. The examiner often starts with familiar territory.
- Practice under time pressure: Doing reading exercises against the clock builds the speed you need. The Bestå app has exercises modelled on the same structure as PD2 exam tasks, with answer explanations.

Frequently asked questions
How long is a PD2 certificate valid?
PD2 certificates do not expire. Once you have passed, the result is valid indefinitely for most administrative purposes in Denmark.
Can I retake individual parts of PD2?
Yes. If you fail one part, you only need to retake that part — not the entire exam. Check with your exam centre for their specific retake policy and scheduling.
How much does PD2 cost?
The exam fee varies by provider. If you are enrolled in a subsidised language course (danskuddannelse), the exam is often covered. Contact your sprogskole for current prices.
Is PD2 required for residency or citizenship?
The Danish language requirements for residency permits and citizenship change periodically. Rather than state specifics here that may be out of date, check nyidanmark.dk for the current requirements that apply to your situation.
Where can I find official past PD2 papers as PDF?
Official past papers are published by the Danish Ministry of Higher Education and Research. The Bestå app contains the same question types in an interactive format with answers and explanations — directly on your phone.
What is PD3 and do I need it?
PD3 is the B2-level exam, one step above PD2. It is referenced in requirements for Danish citizenship and certain higher education programmes — check nyidanmark.dk for what applies to your situation. Read the PD3 exam guide →
